Mission
To celebrate God’s gift of life with the people of Faith Ministries Church and the community through health promotion, to strengthen the connection of the mind, body and spirit.
Purpose:
The Health Advocacy Ministry (HAM) is designed to build on and strengthen the capacities of individuals, families and the Church community to understand and care for one another in light of their relationship to God, faith traditions, themselves, and the broader society. HAM will assist and empower individuals to become more active partners in the management of their personal health and resources.
HEALTH TOPIC OF THE MONTH: CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
COVID has been here for 9+ months now…. and winter is looming. Mental health issues related to our lock down and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression and other mental disorders. NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) has a 24 hour helpline: 1-800-950-6264. The relapse and overdose rate has increased by 30% since March 2020.
Also as we prepare to go into the winter months and holiday season it is important to do the following these 3 things:
1. Don’t ignore any chronic conditions that you have
As they continue to deal with COVID-19, physicians are finding a disturbing trend. Fear of contracting the virus is keeping some people from getting medical care for chronic health problems that need attention, or preventive care that could catch an underlying issue before it becomes a problem.
While it’s important to stay home as much as possible and social distance from others, it’s also important to protect your health by returning to your doctor for routine check-ups and health screenings. If you have a chronic condition, regular check-ins with your doctor can help keep your condition in check.
Undiagnosed and untreated chronic conditions can make you vulnerable to COVID-19 and put you at increased risk for severe illness if you get the virus. Doctors are finding that many of the sickest coronavirus patients have undiagnosed chronic medical conditions.
2. Get a Flu Shot
- Flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick with flu.
- Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization for children, working age adults, and older adults.
- Flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions.
- Flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick.
- Getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.
